Hope for Agriculture and Fisheries?

Nova Scotian's should be pleased by Premier Rodney MacDonald's decision to realign the department of Agriculture and Fisheries into two separate entities.
"By creating a stand-alone Department of Agriculture we are acknowledging the extraordinary importance of our farmers and farming communities," said Mr. MacDonald. "Our agricultural communities have told us they needed a single-access point for their dealings with government, and we agree.
"As well, we feel that the traditional fishing industry and the emerging aquaculture industry deserve direct contact with provincial government employees. This is one way to make sure government does its part to help this vital industry thrive."
I have suggested in the past that Agriculture and Fisheries might do well to have their own departments. And yet I found myself surprised with the decision. I am also a little skeptical that much will change for agricultural and fisheries communities dealing with the government. This may prove to be a very excellent PR move but a very ineffective change. But I'm going to try and be optimistic.
I hope that Ron Chisholm finds himself well learnt in the issues surrounding his new cabinet post and that he does an A+ job. (It already sounds as though he may make an appearance at the Organic Conference being held in Wolfville, March 2nd to 4th.) But Liberal and NDP Agriculture Critics, Stephen MacNeil and John MacDonell along with Liberal and NDP Fisheries Critics, Harold Theriault and Charlie Parker will hopefully be there helping to ensure that the Agriculture, Fisheries, and Aquaculture communities are tended to with the utmost care, because that would be truly impressive.

Martinko
|
|

Hi to all! Today we got something special for you. This post is devoted to the remarkable Russian cartoon MARTINKO (1987) which was written and directed by Eduard Nazarov. It is the classic now and Mr.Nazarov become one of the most dear and favorite modern directors in Russia. The cartoon is available on DVD edition of Masters of Russian Animation 4 and it is possible to download it in MOV format from here for the purpose of preview :-). But we must warn you. The English subtitles are not very good and sadly do not transfer all colors of the Old Russian speech. So this is the art work for MARTINKO and all these drawings were done by Eduard Nazarov himself.

All art material was presented by Vladimir Nikitin

V-Day
|
|
Forget the flowers, forget the chocolates but don't forget the women you love V-Day is an international response against violence towards women. It is a vision of a world where women can live safely and freely, without rape, battery, incest, genital mutilation or sexual slavery. It is also a catalyst for change: it will lay the groundwork for new educational, protectieve and legislative endeavors throught the world. Above all else, it is the belief that women and girls should have the opportunity to create and thrive in a safe world. Perhaps this V-Day you should consider doing the women you love something extra. Write to your local MLA and MP and call upon them to advance women's social and economic security, implement aboriginal women's human right's, and improve legal aid for women. This could be done by strengthening the Canada Social Transfer. With increased funding the CST could serve as a mechanism for fulfilling Canada's human rights obligations to women under our Charter of Rights and Freedoms and United Nations treaties such as the Convention to Eliminate all forms of Discrimination Against Women. And of course, pledge to always treat them with respect as an equal. The Saint Mary's University Women's Centre put on a fabulous production this past weekend. Thank You to Kristel for inviting me as part of the art show, the support was greatly appreciated. And also thank you for a fabulous 'Because he Like to Look at It' and sharing the most amazing 'Vagina Happy Fact'. And of course, thanks Hollster for attending with me and helping me set-up. Love from Amanda
